Catholic Women's League
of the
Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King
CONGRATULATIONS!
Helen Dillon Memorial Bursary
Helen Dillon was a member of the Cathedral council of the Catholic Women's League for nearly 75 years at the time of her death in January 2012. To recognize Helen's commitment to the League, the bursary we had long-presented to a graduating Grade 8 girl of our parish was renamed after her.
The recipient of this award models the principles of our Catholic Faith through her active presence in the parish by setting an example to others. This year’s nominated young lady is a well-rounded individual who is active in our parish, her school and our province.
She is a recent recipient of the Bishop’s Service Award and has been a long-time Altar Server in our Parish. As a student at Corpus Christi School, she occasionally read at school Masses and recently was a representative at the board-wide Scripture Reading event. She volunteers by helping younger children as a Lunch Room Helper and as a Black Belt “Sensei” of the young “Little Dragon” students at her Karate Club.
This young lady represented her school in a number of Science Fairs including teams that were board-wide, Bay Area and National levels. In these competitions, she won a gold medal; was awarded for 1 of the 4 top projects; and won 3 different awards. She also managed to serve a 5 week term as a Legislative Page to MPPs at Queen’s Park and is a competitive figure skater.
We congratulate this year’s recipient of the Helen Dillon Memorial Bursary: Gabriella.

Martha & Mary Appreciation Award
Last year, in celebration of the Year of Faith, the Catholic Women’s League Executive of our Parish initiated the For God and Canada Award. This award is named in honour of our Lord’s friends, Martha & Mary of Bethany who exemplified service to our Lord both in deed and devotion.
This year’s recipient was nominated and selected because she demonstrates the objectives of the League in her service to God, our parish, the League, and the community. She was chosen because she epitomizes Martha & Mary of Bethany.
This year’s recipient has been a member of the Catholic Women's League at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King for 23 years. She has:
-
helped in the kitchen of the Good Shepherd Centre
-
stuffed envelopes that were mailed out to members
-
attended many "Lunch 'n Learns"
-
made several Linus Blankets
-
packaged "Hygiene Kits"
Although she never held an Executive position, through her own membership she is responsible for the membership of 3 of her daughters and 1 grand-daughter. Of her 3 daughters, all have held Executive positions, 2 have became Presidents & 1 is currently our Hamilton Regional Chair.
We congratulate this year’s recipient of the Martha & Mary Appreciation Award: Judith.
